Schartz Christmas

We started our Christmas celebration by attending the 5:00 p.m. Mass. I don't have any pictures of that as I didn't think Father Ted would appreciate flash photography during the Mass. I will say the Cathedral was full which is always nice to see. After Mass we headed back to Joe's parents to start the evening with chili, entertainment, gift opening and more entertainment. After dinner the men were nominated to do the dishes. Some men were working harder than others, ha. Joe was clearly parched and needed to stop for a beverage break. As always, before opening gifts, the family sang silent night accompanied by Joe's sister, Jeri, on the guitar as the grandchildren carried in candles to line up around the nativity scene and Keylee (not pictured), since she is the youngest grandchild, carried in baby Jesus to place in the manger.

Our nephew, Preston, asked for Jeri's guitar for a special impromptu song. As you can see from the cheers behind Preston, everyone enjoyed his song.

Grammy and the Grands had yet another performance-wooing the crowd. Joe's Mom gathered the grandchildren and did a special rendition of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

The performance brought the crowd to their feet. (oh ya, we were already standing but it was still great)

One highlight that I failed to get pictures of was Joe's sister Toni and her presentation of "Toni's Favorite Things." I think she was dressed in about seven layers of clothing as she had a different shirt to represent each of her favorite things. Another highlight was Joe's Dad wearing the reindeer antlers during the gift exchange (he wore the antlers the grandchildren wore as pictured above). I did get pictures of it but elected not to post them in fear he might not find it as funny today as he did on Christmas Eve. Nonetheless, he was in the Christmas spirit and helped make the evening memorable and fun everyone. Finally, the highlight that must not go unmentioned was that all six children were home with their spouses and children. However, John and Jeri's daughter, Jenilee, is a nurse and had to work in the ER and could not travel to Dodge and John and Jeri's son, Ryan, works on the Ron Paul campaign and he is assigned to Maryland and could not make the trip home. Jenilee and Ryan were missed.

We celebrated Christmas at Thanksgiving with my family and I will post those photographs at a later date.

Christmas Already??

Christmas came early, as it always does, at our house. We are headed back to Dodge City for a few days to spend time with family so Santa decided to stop by before we left. This Christmas seasons seems to be exceptionally busy. I still cannot believe it is really Christmas. Where did time go? I have been trying to keep up but I am certain I did not get everything done that needed to be done at home and at work. Oh well, it is time to enjoy the time with family and to reflect on the true reason for the season. This was the year for electronics. Kira-iPad, Keenan-iPod Touch and Keylee-LeapPad (with a new American Girl Doll). The LeapPad was a last minute purchase from a friend who had purchased several and had one to get rid of. It was a huge hit with Keylee and she was super surprised.

The kids have all been asking for the Reebok ZigZag shoes. I have not wanted to buy them in the past because the shoes seem so heavy. Personally, I hate heavy shoes. Nonetheless, I broke down and we gave them new kicks for Christmas.

On Sunday we attended a Santa Brunch. The kids came face-to-face with the "big man" and were able to make their last pitch for why they deserve the items on their list.

We attended a holiday dinner at a friend's home who had gingerbread houses for the kids to make. At first, I thought she was crazy to take that on with all the kids but it actually worked out well and the kids loved the group project.

This was Keenan's finished house. He was pretty proud of it.

Running the Strip at Night

At the end of December Joe and I will celebrate 15 years of marriage. Several months back Joe asked me what I wanted for our anniversary. I told him what I really wanted was for him to run with me in Las Vegas for the Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon. Joe was reluctant to agree but I was quick to sign him up. The marathon and 1/2 marathon started at night and Las Vegas Boulevard (the strip) was closed to all traffic. Apparently, the casinos complained about losing millions of dollars and the newspapers reported that this will be the last year for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and 1/2 Marathon to be at night. I hope the reports are not true.

Joe and I had hoped for some warmer weather. When we arrived in Las Vegas on Dec. 3rd it was mid 30's and 15 mph winds. The run was on Dec. 4th. The winds did manage go down some but it was much colder and windier than we had anticipated. Joe managed to train for the 1/2 marathon during football season which was quite an accomplishment. He was pleased with his time considering he averaged two running days per week leading up to the run. I was pleased with my time too. I was a little nervous about the night run as I always run early in the morning. We had a great time but, as always, we were glad to get home to the kiddos.

BIRTHDAY GIRL!!

Keylee turns 4 years old today!

Keylee wanted the Playmobile Grand Mansion. I ordered it online and when reading the description it said "some assembly required." Well, let me say it should have read "all assembly required. All the pieces will be dumped into a box and shipped to you so you can spend several hours assembling it while your child asks...is it done yet?"

Joe and my Dad spent hours putting the doll house together. I told Joe that had football season still been going on the house would still be in the box. Ha.

The Grand Mansion is finished. Each room is furnished separately and each room comes in about as many parts and pieces as the house. I am expecting other rooms to be delivered today by UPS. I guess I know how I will be spending my Monday night.

Keenan and Keylee attended a birthday party where they had cupcakes from Cold Stone. Keenan loved the cupcakes so I decided I would get them for Keylee's birthday. Keenan was right the cupcakes are delicious!

Another Wildcat Weekend

Joe and I generally do not attend KSU Football games but my parents have season tickets so we often drive up to Manhattan for the games. This weekend was a nail-bitter game and my parents made the trip and were able to stay and celebrate Keylee's birthday. My parents also left the KSU football game early (I know crazy, huh?) to watch the kids on Saturday night so Joe and I could go to the MHS production of Phantom of the Opera. The student performers were so talented and did a fantastic job with the production.

The End - For Now

We won't see Joe throwing his hands in the air to signal touchdown for 9 more months as the Indians fell in the second round of play-offs to the Derby Panthers. It has undoubtedly been a great season with the team capturing their third consecutive Centennial League Title, third consecutive District Championship Title and ending each season 10-1. Joe has now completed his third year as head coach with a record of 30-3. I am so proud of Joe and not only for his record as head coach but also for the impact he has had on some many young lives. He truly cares about each and every player and I think that is what makes the loss against Derby so painful for him. I think it has been difficult each year not only to have one loss but for that loss to be a season-ending loss. I don't envy Joe for the pressure he is under to win each and every week. Joe puts in an incredible amount of time preparing each week. I am thankful that he has a great staff of assistant coaches who also put in a great deal of time preparing each week.Today was the first Saturday in four months that Joe has been at home when the kids woke up. Today is the first Saturday when he hasn't been so stressed out that he can actually enjoy the football games on television in the afternoon. Today is also the first Saturday where I could go grocery shopping without three kids (I had to throw that in). I know he is heart broken and time will help him with that but I also know he believes that many great memories were made this year by a great group of kids. I just hope he can now take some time to relax.

Stalking

I do not watch much TV but I do tune in on Wednesday nights for "Modern Family." Eric Stonestreet is a Kansas State University and plays the character Cameron ("Cam") on Modern Family. He is back visiting his alma mater for an event in the Kansas State University Theatre Department. I happen to run into him (there may have been some stalking involved) at our local coffee shop.

This past Friday was about as much as the nerves can handle. Our opponent was Topeka High and they came ready to play and ready to hand MHS their first loss this season. MHS has already captured the league title and the game against Topeka High was the first round of district play. Althought T-High took a 30-13 lead MHS came back for the 44-36 victory. This Friday MHS will face Washburn Rural and it is sure to be a tough game (probably the toughest this season). I know I am already nervous so I cannot imagine how Joe and the players are feeling right now. I just keep telling myself one week/game at at time. ROLL TRIBE!!!

Getting Caught Up

My last blog post was September 1, 2011, so I don't think a post one month later is all that bad. However, there has been plenty to post about since September 1, 2011, just not enough time to sit down and do it. So, I am going to combine some of the past month's events into one post. Here we go: Manhattan High School Indians are now 5-0 and looking to go 6-0 tonight when they take on Highland Park. Unfortunately, Joe lost his starting quarterback in the second quarter of the game last Friday night but we are hoping some offensive changes will keep them on their winning streak.

A little over a week ago I was involved in an accident near Kira and Keenan's school. I had dropped off Kira and Keenan at school and also dropped of Keylee at day care when I noticed Kira left her map homework in the front seat of my car. I went around the block to run her homework back to her. As I was traveling north on Browning, in our (new) Buick Enclave, a Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Dickens when the driver of the Jeep failed to stop (or even slow down) at the stop sign and blew through the intersection going about 40 to 45 mph. Since I was preparing to enter a school zone I had already decreased my speed but I could not get stopped and our cars collided with my car striking the right rear passenger side of his car. The impact made his car go airborne for about twenty-five (25) yards before finally landing on Dickens on its roof. In the above picture, you can see the Jeep on its top. Luckily there were no injuries. He was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device. I am without the Enclave for about three weeks due to about $8,500.00 worth of damage done. In the meantime, I am driving a rental car.

On September 11, 2011, I journeyed, with some friends, to Chicago to run the Chicago Half-Marathon. One year ago this Sunday, I ran the Chicago full marathon and can honestly say I enjoyed the full marathon so much more. Overall we had a great weekend! Now, I am training for the Rock-n-Roll which I will run in Las Vegas on December 4, 2011.

My sister and her husband have season tickets to the KSU games. Generally Joe and I do not attend the games because, quite honestly, I am footballed (not sure that is even a word) out by Saturday and like the down time at home. Plus, neither of us are KSU grads and don't quite bleed purple as others do around here. However, my sister and my parents, who also have season tickets, were unable to make the trip, so my other sister and her family came and we were all able to go to the game.

My sister has great seats in the front row of the south end zone which generally allows the kids to get pictures with Willie.

Little Apple Soccer Tournament

Kira had a full weekend of soccer last weekend. It was pretty hot but her team was tough and played through the heat.

Back to School

Here we go.....another year. Kira started 4th Grade and Keenan started 1st Grade. So far so good as they both love school and their teachers! We are off to a great start.

The Falcon meets the Spider

Joe's brother, James, an Air Force Academy graduate (Air Force Falcons), captured himself a Richmond, VA graduate, Rachel (Richmond Spiders) They were united in marriage in Rochester, NY on August 20, 2011. They had the most delicious sugar cookies with falcons and spiders on them. (Joe would not know about how good the cookies were because I ate them both, ha) Joe and I made a super quick trip that was worth every minute. My parents stayed with and spoiled our kids in Manhattan. When I called home to check on things Kira told me, "Don't worry Mom Grandma and Umpa are perfect."

Dodge City Days 2011

The first weekend of August we traveled back to our hometown for Dodge City Days. I have one sister that still lives in Dodge and my other two sisters traveled "home" for the weekend. Kira was so excited to go back so she could ride horses and go to the rodeo.
